At Mestalla Stadium, Real Madrid defeated Valencia 2-1 in the closing minutes of their away match. Modric’s goal and an overtime score from Jude allow them to sneak three points and move up to the top of the La Liga table for the time being, as Atletico hasn’t played their match. After some disappointing outcomes in their previous games, Barcelona lost their long-held top spot. After overcoming Barcelona, Atletico maintained their calm to move up to the top of the league under Diego until Real Madrid’s yesterday fixture. However, their next game would determine whether they move up to the top and wrest the title from Real Madrid once more. However, Valencia scored first with Hugo’s assistance at 27′. They upheld their lead until 85 minutes.

Vinícius Júnior was sent off in the 76th minute of the match after violent conduct against Valencia’s goalkeeper. It led Ancelotti to play with 10 men against Valencia. Though reckless, it has regularly been seen that Vini has been quite violent and overaggressive towards opposition players, and sometimes they were for very mere reasons. In a recent conference in Saudi, some statements were made by Cristiano Ronaldo that Vini deserved the Ballon d’Or, but after his recent altercation and regular behaviour against oppositions, we may forget that not only now but in the coming future he may be barred from winning the award. The Ballon d’Or is a prestigious award that not only considers a player’s game but also his on-field behaviour and sometimes includes his off-field behaviours for validation and awarding points. If Vini does not improve his recent behaviours, then his fate would be like Frank Ribery’s or Zlatan’s. As Jude Bellingham’s goal was a deciding factor of the game, it again raised a concern about why the match was extended for extra minutes. Are the referees being too lenient towards Madrid that no final whistle was blown until they scored!!! Well, it’s a different scenario, which may be a point of discussion in some future blog.

Real Madrid is visited by Las Palmas in Santiago on 19th Jan. While Atlético face Osasuna on the 12th of Jan. This match would define the top spot of the table in the league.
